AOI MATSURI FESTIVAL May 15th
Imperial Palace~Shimogamo Shrine~Kamigamo Shirine
On May 15 Kamigamo and Shimogamo Shirines hold their annual festival which is popularly known as Aoi Matsuri. It is one of the most solemn and graceful festivals in Japan and it has not been well preserved throughout the ages since 6th century. From the viewpoint of the history of Japanese manners and customs, it is very valuable reminder of the past since it has faithfully followed the old customs.
The most attractive feature in this fete is the Imperial Messenger’s Procession consisting of a gorgeous carriage pulled by an ox, flowered umbrellas, courtiers and court ladies in traditional costumes which revive the noble court life in the Heian Period (794-1185).

Around Shijo-Street
The Gion Festival is one of the most popular festivals in Japan. It encompasses the whole month of July. The most festive period begins the evening of July 14 and continues through 17. People who live in the downtown area of Kyoto open their homes and exhibit their family treasures to passersby who are touring the city, inspecting the floats which have been placed in whichever part of the city they represent. Then, in the morning on 17, the grand procession winds through the city, completely halting the nomal activity of Kyoto for a day. |
